About

Evan Apfelbaum is Professor of Management & Organizations at the Questrom School of Business at Boston University.

Evan studies how people learn to navigate differences, how institutions try to create fairer outcomes, and why those efforts can be both necessary and difficult.

Trained as a social psychologist, his work also draws from developmental psychology, political psychology, sociology, organizational behavior, child development, and public life, but social psychology remains his home base. Across these fields, he examines diversity, intergroup relations, organizational behavior, fairness, the ways people make sense of identity and inclusion, and how those beliefs shape inequality in organizations and society.

Before joining Boston University, he served on the faculty at the MIT Sloan School of Management and as a postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.

He received a B.S. in Psychology and Music from Union College and a Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Tufts University.

His research has appeared in leading journals including Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Psychological Science, Management Science, Organization Science, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

He has been recognized by the Gordon Allport Intergroup Relations Prize, research awards from the American Psychological Association, and by Poets & Quants as one of the Top 40 Business Professors in the world Under 40.
